We’ll be discussing
The opening scene
Eleanor’s childhood in apartheid South Africa.
We might consider questions like:
What are some of the themes emerging in the early stages of the novel? How do those relate to today?
How do the different perspectives of Eleanor and Kelebohile (Rebecca) enhance our understanding of life during apartheid in South Africa?
Eleanor both conforms and rebels. She is both innocent and increasingly more aware. How do her personal challenges map—or not!—to the larger socio-political struggle of the time?
In what ways do the characters' interactions reflect the complexities of race and class during apartheid?
How might Eleanor's choices and experiences resonate with contemporary discussions about privilege, identity, and rebellion in youth culture?
