Book Club Guests

Mandela was free. The ANC was unbanned. The parties were at the negotiating table and we were just emerging into adulthood. It was a tumultuous time.

In our second book club, we’ll be joined by three special guests: Kate (a diplomat’s daughter), Lois (inspiration for Meredith) and Neil (inspiration for Alasdair).

Kate Webster

Kate arrived at St Mary’s DSG as the Canadian Ambassador’s daughter right as South Africa was erupting. When we went off to University, she was teaching in the townships. She had experiences and perspectives that most of us sheltered white girls at St Mary’s were oblivious to.

Lois Strachan

Lois is a pioneering disability rights advocate in South Africa, a bestselling author, and a musician.

She is the chief inspiration for the character Meredith in the book.

Neil Cramb

Neil is an all-things-boats-and-sailing maestro…and still educating Sue on music and rowing.

He is the chief inspiration for the character Alasdair in the book.
