Kudo's & Comments

Sue’s writing evokes strong emotions and saves space for nuance as she explores the complex topic of war, racism, sexism, mental health, global and corporate politics—and being a woman through it all.

The standard stories of hardship to redemption often feel unrelatable. This one feels so intimate and relatable, especially around workplace issues, which are rarely dealt with in fiction. The hardship is real, relatable - even while set in SA and Palestine - so human and ordinary. I loved the honesty about it.

Sue’s writing has emotional honesty, literary quality and her narration is excellent.

I’ve just come out of an abusive relationship. This book was so powerful for me. I couldn’t put it down because I’ve just been through what Eleanor experienced. And Eleanor comes out the other side. This was why it was so emotional and powerful for me. I could feel her anxiety. I could feel her panic attacks. I could feel her loss of a parent. I could feel the shit storm that was her workplace. I was side by side with her on that roller-coaster. And I could also feel her joy, her redemption, her rising stronger than ever. And that gave me hope and healing.

It was un-put-down-able. It was such a page turner I didn’t sleep the whole flight. I haven’t binge read like this in years. I experienced every single emotion under the sun reading this: heartbreak, tears, laughter, joy. “Oh my god, that’s me”. And then I’m in tears again. It was absolutely engrossing.
It was so relatable. It’s not interesting…it’s fascinating.

I don’t usually do fiction, I’m usually reading non-fiction. This beautifully blended the two.

I love learning about the world through books like this. I feel like I better understand the nuances of the unrest in both South Africa and Israel / Palestine through this story.

The writing is lyrical and vivid. It conveys a sense of place so well and describes things so beautifully. Characters with disabilities are well represented.

The writing is so poignant, especially in light of what is happening today.

It’s a story of coming into one's self, love, survival, global and office politics. It's hard to put down and sticks with you. Bonus: I know Sue's distinctive voice and heard it in my head while reading it, and because she narrated the audiobook, you can enjoy it too!

No book can be written for “everyone”. The best books are all written for and to someone. Karen Spreng is my someone. We were having so much fun at the party we forgot to record her words. Because she’s that kind of person, she recorded them at home to share with you all here.

Hint: Lois inspires a character in the book!
